mary-sue/gary-stu testing!
[/size]okay i know you guys hear about not making a mary-sue all the time, but i think maybe you guys could have forgotten and this is so important you cannot even fathom it. it's extremely important you all look this over and think about your characters to see if they need to be shaped a bit over to get out of the "mary/gary" stage. i know that everyone wants to have a character that everyone likes and wants to plot with, but sometimes making your character likable doesn't come from making them perfect. a real character is the best character and that's what draws people in. i will quickly just tell you guys some things i've learned:
ONE- if you have any sort of dramatic event happen to the character, it will surely shape them. if they're mother died, they will not be happy and dandy. they will most likely be really sad, and even bitter. they might doubt god and the power humans have. neglect by parents usually leads to people wanting attention and going to some pretty extreme cases to get it. rape is extremely serious, and definitely should not be taken lightly. if you character is abused at all, they will not be acting normal. it is very important to research certain topics before role playing them out to make sure you are not glamorizing the topic, as most of these things are really serious.
TWO- a flaw is not really a flaw unless you can use it. if you say your character sucks at something but they never have to do it... what's even the point? flaws in actual character are the most important. the first thing i do when i have to do to make a character is to think of their flaws, as i think it's the part of character that makes them real. some really good flaws to think about are: low self-esteem, rude, lies constantly, brags about self, has no direction in life, jealous, extremely distant, no common sense and someone who pushes their beliefs on others. there are a lot of flaws out there and some of them are really important to have.
THREE- your character should have enough flaws to balance out their good points. being a slut does not count for all of them, sorry.
FOUR- never turn your flaws into good traits. do not think that by making your character "mean if someone is mean to their friends" is sufficing for a flaw. you are making them protective and brave, not fierce and rude.
FIVE- for everything there is a reason. do not make them a slut just because they like sex. there's a lot that goes on mentally and though other people may not see it... it's important to give your character thoughts and consciousness. maybe your character has sex because it's an emotional outlet but after they do it it just makes them feel worse. making a slut is really a lot of work, so think about that.
